Sdu: Oververhitting arbeidsmarkt fiscalisten dreigt

De arbeidsmarkt voor fiscalisten vertoont tekenen van oververhitting. Dat blijkt uit het jaarlijkse onderzoek Werken in de Fiscaliteit. Organisaties moeten steeds meer moeite doen om aan fiscalisten te komen. Vooral fiscalisten met ervaring zijn lastig te vinden, wat onder meer te wijten is aan de lage arbeidsmobiliteit. De werkdruk is toegenomen en zal waarschijnlijk verder stijgen, mede gezien de verwachte verdere toename van de schaarste aan geschikte mensen.

Gezocht: fiscalist met ervaring

73% van de organisaties in het fiscale werkveld heeft het afgelopen half jaar medewerkers aangenomen. 77% van de respondenten geeft aan dat het om starters gaat, 60% zegt dat (ook) fiscalisten met ervaring zijn aangetrokken. Het blijkt vooral steeds lastiger te worden om voldoende fiscalisten met ervaring te vinden.

Lage arbeidsmobiliteit zet markt onder druk

Dit jaar is 21% van de fiscalisten op zoek naar ander werk. Dat is weliswaar het hoogste percentage sinds het eerste onderzoek Werken in de Fiscaliteit in 2012 werd gehouden, maar het is laag vergeleken met andere beroepsgroepen. Daarbij komt dat lang niet alle fiscalisten die een andere baan zoeken de daad bij het woord voegen: 46% van de fiscalisten die op zoek zijn naar een job bij een andere werkgever hebben het afgelopen jaar actief gesolliciteerd.

Organisaties richten werving en selectie nog meer op studenten

Gezien de lage arbeidsmobiliteit van de fiscalist en de toenemende vraag naar mensen, richten meer organisaties de pijlen op de student fiscaal. Daarbij worden instrumenten als evenementen, referral recruitment en tentamentrainingen steeds intensiever ingezet. Daarnaast worden, mede met het oog op de voortgaande digitalisering en robotisering van het fiscale vak, ook mensen geworven met een zogenoemd ‘STEM-profiel’; science, technology, engineering, mathematics .

Hoge werkdruk

89% van de fiscalisten heeft de mogelijkheid de werktijden flexibel in te delen. Ondanks de verworvenheden van Het Nieuwe Werken, meer vrijheid en een grotere flexibiliteit, vindt 46% van de respondenten dat de werkdruk hoog is. Een op de acht fiscalisten vindt dat de balans tussen werk en privé is verstoord.

Verder oplopende spanning arbeidsmarkt middellange termijn

Fiscalisten verwachten een verder aantrekkende arbeidsmarkt met meer vacatures. De reeds bestaande spanning op de arbeidsmarkt zal binnen nu en vijf jaar toenemen. 66% van de respondenten verwacht dat er een tekort zal zijn aan mensen die een zelfde functie hebben als zijzelf (61% in 2016).

Publieke sector blijft voor fiscalisten populairste werkgever, student wil vooral in de private sector werken

Sinds het onderzoek Werken in de Fiscaliteit voor de eerste keer werd gehouden is de Belastingdienst voor fiscalisten steevast de populairste werkgever. Ook opvallend is dat de rechterlijke macht en het wetenschappelijk onderwijs in alle onderzoeken vanaf 2012 steevast in de top vijf zijn te vinden. BDO is het enige fiscale advieskantoor dat in al die jaren in de top vijf is te vinden. Van de Big Four-kantoren zitten er in de periode 2012-2017 één of een paar onderin de top vijf, dan wel net daaronder.

Worden studenten fiscaal van wo en hbo gevraagd waar zij zouden willen werken, dan geeft 69% aan bij een belastingadvieskantoor en 12% bij een advocatenkantoor.

Minder positief over inzetbaarheid met oog op langer doorwerken

Uit het onderzoek Werken in de fiscaliteit 2017 blijkt dat steeds minder fiscalisten positief zijn over de eigen inzetbaarheid met het oog op langer doorwerken. Een van de manieren om langer doorwerken makkelijker te maken, is demotie, een functie aanvaarden met minder verantwoordelijkheid en een dito lager salaris. 33% van de fiscalisten ziet dat wel zitten, een lichte toename vergeleken met 2016. Voor 32% is demotie geen optie en 35% weet het niet.

Berenschot voerde samen met Sdu voor de zesde maal op rij het representatieve onafhankelijke online arbeidsmarktonderzoek Werken in de Fiscaliteit uit onder fiscalisten in de private en de publieke sector. De resultaten geven een beeld van actuele ontwikkelingen in arbeidsvoorwaarden en arbeidsomstandigheden. Daarnaast wordt inzichtelijk hoe fiscalisten zich op de arbeidsmarkt oriënteren. Sinds 2016 worden ook studenten fiscaal van wo en hbo bevraagd over hun kansen op de arbeidsmarkt en voorkeurswerkgever. De resultaten van het onderzoek Werken in de Fiscaliteit staan afgedrukt in het tijdschrift met dezelfde naam.

BLOKKER HOLDING BRENGT SHARED SERVICES ONDER BIJ EXTERNE PARTIJEN

Blokker Holding heeft overeenstemming bereikt met de bedrijven Retail Property Management B.V. (RPM) en Précon Food Management B.V. (Précon) over de overname van de shared services op het gebied van respectievelijk vastgoedmanagement en management van productveiligheid, per 1 januari 2018. De individuele werkmaatschappijen die behoren tot Blokker Holding, namelijk Blokker, Big Bazar en Xenos, hebben met RPM en Précon[1] service level agreements afgesloten. Ook de gezamenlijke inkoop van niet-handelsgoederen wordt ondergebracht bij een externe partij, namelijk proQure. Het uitbesteden van deze shared services door Blokker Holding volgt op de strategiewijziging van het concern die op 16 mei jl. is aangekondigd.

Blokker Holding heeft op 16 mei een strategiewijziging aangekondigd waarbij het concern zich volledig zal richten op Blokker in Nederland en België en de overige werkmaatschappijen zal verkopen. Daarmee komen de gemeenschappelijke holding-activiteiten te vervallen. Voor wat betreft de shared services is ervoor gekozen deze te outsourcen aan derden om de prijs-kwaliteitverhouding en de schaalvoordelen voor de afzonderlijke bedrijven te waarborgen.

Een deel van de medewerkers van Shared Service Center Vastgoed treedt per 1 januari 2018 bij RPM in dienst. Bij Précon worden per 1 januari 2018 alle Blokker Holding medewerkers van het Shared Service Center Kwaliteit in dienst genomen. In totaal zijn circa 20 medewerkers bij deze activiteiten betrokken.

De inkoopcontracten voor niet-handelsgoederen worden per 1 januari 2018 ondergebracht bij proQure.

Vastgoedmanagement

Retail Property Management BV is specialist in retail vastgoedmanagement en behartigt uitsluitend de belangen voor de retailer als huurder. RPM zal alle werkzaamheden van het Shared Service Center Vastgoed overnemen: van vastgoedmanagement, strategische vastgoedadvisering tot contractenbeheer. Zo kunnen de afzonderlijke winkelformules efficiënt aandacht besteden aan hun corebusiness. 

Productveiligheid en Kwaliteit

De activiteiten van het Shared Service Center Kwaliteit – dat onder meer toetst of consumentenartikelen voldoen aan de regelgeving op het gebied van productveiligheid –  zullen worden ondergebracht bij Précon Food Management B.V. Précon heeft jarenlange ervaring met productveiligheid, kwaliteitsmanagement en wet- en regelgeving op het gebied van voedingsmiddelen. Door het team van Blokker Holding op te nemen in de organisatie, kan Précon zijn expertise en processen op het gebied van non-food uitbreiden. De bedrijven van Blokker Holding kunnen blijven rekenen op een goede prijs-kwaliteitverhouding en behoud van het huidige expertiseniveau. Verder kunnen zij beschikken over een breed scala aan aanverwante services van Précon.

Inkoop niet-handelsgoederen

De inkoop van niet-handelsgoederen wordt overgedragen aan proQure. proQure is gespecialiseerd in de inkoop van met name NPR (Non Product Related) categorieën, ook wel de inkoop van niet-handelsgoederen en diensten van organisaties. proQure begeleidt de inkoopprocessen en stroomlijnt de procedures en het contractmanagement in nauwe samenwerking met de klant. Blokker Holding verwacht dat de afzonderlijke winkelbedrijven kunnen blijven profiteren van de inkoopvoordelen ook nadat zij door Blokker Holding zijn verkocht.

[1] Précon heeft ook een SLA met Trend Center afgesloten. Trend Center is een zelfstandige groothandel en onderdeel van Blokker Holding.

 EU list of non-cooperative tax jurisdictions was agreed by the Finance Ministers of EU Member States

The new list is part of the EU's work to clamp down on tax evasion and avoidance following the scandals in the Panama Papers and Paradise Papers.

According to the European Commission the list will help the EU to deal more robustly with external threats to Member States' tax bases and to tackle third countries that consistently refuse to play fair on tax matters.

In total, 17 countries were listed for failing to meet agreed tax good governance standards. In addition, 47 countries have committed to addressing deficiencies in their tax systems and to meet the required criteria, following contacts with the EU.

Oxfam applied the EU’s own criteria to the 92 countries screened by the EU, as well as to the 28 EU Member States. According to this analysis, at least 35 non-EU countries should have been included in the EU blacklist, and 4 EU member states: Ireland, Luxembourg, the Netherlands and Malta.

Pierre Moscovici, Commissioner for Economic and Financial Affairs, Taxation and Customs, said: "The adoption of the first ever EU blacklist of tax havens marks a key victory for transparency and fairness,” said Pierre Moscovici, Commissioner for Economic and Financial Affairs, Taxation and Customs.

“But the process does not stop here. We must intensify the pressure on listed countries to change their ways. Blacklisted jurisdictions must face consequences in the form of dissuasive sanctions, while those that have made commitments must follow up on them quickly and credibly.”

The following countries are included in the black list: American Samoa, Bahrain, Barbados, Grenada, Guam, South Korea, Macao, Marshall Islands, Mongolia, Namibia, Palau, Panama, Saint Lucia, Samoa, Trinidad and Tobago, Tunisia, and United Arab Emirates.

US fuel stock build signals easing demand; Brent crude futures at $61.39 (+0.28%) a barrel this morning after reaching a session low of $61.12.

Prices have slipped somewhat from November’s peak at $64,62, which represented two-year highs.

Oil prices fell more than two percent to its lowest in more than two weeks (yesterday) after a sharp rise in US inventories of refined fuel suggested demand may be flagging, while crude production hit another weekly record.

US government data showed US crude stocks fell 5.6 million barrels, more than expected, which was partially the result of the closure of a keystone pipeline after a leak in South Dakota in mid-November.

Supply cuts by the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries, Russia and other producers that were extended at a meeting last week for all of 2018 have helped lift Brent prices by more than 40 percent since June.

EasyJet puts first flights on sale from Berlin Tegel

Airline puts more than one million seats on sale for its winter season flights between 5 January to 24 March 2018. easyJet, Europe's leading airline, has today put close to one million seats on sale for flights operating to and from Berlin Tegel between 5 January and 24 March 2018.

The new routes announced include four German domestic routes connecting Berlin with Düsseldorf, Frankfurt, Munich and Stuttgart. easyJet will also add 15 international destinations, including flights up to 5 times a day to key cities like Vienna and Zurich, as well as regular connections to popular leisure destinations like Mallorca and Catania. Passengers can look forward to low fares across the easyJet network by booking early at www.easyJet.com.

easyJet will operate the leading short haul network at Tegel connecting passengers to and from destinations across Germany and the rest of Europe. The airline is already transports more than 5.3 million people to and from Berlin each year through its existing base at Berlin Schoenefeld which opened in 2004, now serving 51 routes.

easyJet flights to and from Berlin Tegel Airport remain subject to regulatory approval of easyJet’s transaction with Air Berlin. easyJet signed an agreement with Air Berlin to acquire part of its operations at Berlin Tegel Airport in October this year.

Bitcoin trades up new record as it charges past $14,000; once the hype slows down, see some sort of correction around te corner

Bitcoin ploughed past $14,000 to a fresh record on Thursday as investors continued to pile in, triggering a warning the cryptocurrency was "like a charging train with no brakes" that would inevitably slip back.

It touched a new high of $14,475 before slipping back to $14,328 in Asian trade. The rally came just a day after the virtual currency hit the $12,000 mark for the first time.

Bitcoin -- which came into being in 2009 as a bit of encrypted software and has no central bank backing it -- has risen from a 2017 low of $752 in mid-January, and surged dramatically in the past month.

The increased interest has been driven by however growing acceptance among traditional investors.

US regulators last week cleared the way for Bitcoin futures to trade on major exchanges, including the world's biggest futures centre the Chicago Mercantile Exchange (CME).

But some, including the US Federal Reserve, ECB, BoE, have warned against dabbling in Bitcoin as it could threaten financial stability, and fears of a bubble have increased as the price has soared.

North Korea says it does not seek war with the United States but Washington’s threats against the North have made the outbreak of war in the Korean Peninsula an established fact!

The official North Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) quoted an unnamed spokesman for this North’s Foreign Ministry as making the comments late on Wednesday.

During the past recent months, tensions on the Korean Peninsula have escalated markedly after Pyongyang’s latest missile and nuclear tests, conducted despite growing international pressure.

Julio Poch (v/m captain Transavia) op weg naar Nederland na acht jaar gevangenis in Argentinië

De voormalige Transavia piloot die vorige week in Buenos Aires volledig werd vrijgesproken van het uitvoeren van vluchten des doods, wordt in de loop van de morgen op Schiphol verwacht.

Poch mocht nog niet onmiddellijk na zijn vrijspraak in Argentinië  vertrekken, mede met een op handen zijnde hoger beroep door het OM aldaar.

Poch zat acht jaar onterecht (zonder enig hard bewijs) in een Argentijnse gevangenis, maar mocht eindelijk toch vertrekken mede door de tomeloze inzet van het advocatenechtpaar Knoops. 

De afgelopen dagen zijn de benodigde uitreisdocumenten geregeld en is hij meteen vertrokken..

Poch was een van de weinigen die in het monsterproces tegen 54 verdachten werd vrijgesproken. Het OM had levenslang tegen hem geëist.

Borrelpraat! Poch werd ervan verdacht - op voorspraak van drie Transavia collega’s - ten tijde van het militaire regime van Generaal Videla politieke tegenstanders uit het vliegtuig te hebben gegooid, niet het minste bewijs kon echter in deze worden overlegd.

Een aanklacht tegen zeker een van deze Transavia piloten, wegens een verklaring welke op gespannen voet met de waarheid staat, wordt alsnog overwogen.

We disagree with the US decision to move its embassy to Jerusalem and recognise Jerusalem as the Israeli capital before a final status agreement. We believe it is unhelpful in terms of prospects for peace in the region. The British Embassy to Israel is based in Tel Aviv and we have no plans to move it.

Our position on the status of Jerusalem is clear and long-standing: it should be determined in a negotiated settlement between the Israelis and the Palestinians, and Jerusalem should ultimately be the shared capital of the Israeli and Palestinian states. In line with relevant Security Council Resolutions, we regard East Jerusalem as part of the Occupied Palestinian Territories.

We share President Trump’s desire to bring an end to this conflict. We welcome his commitment today to a two-state solution negotiated between the parties, and note the importance of his clear acknowledgement that the final status of Jerusalem, including the sovereign boundaries within the city, must be subject to negotiations between the Israelis and the Palestinians.

We encourage the US Administration to now bring forward detailed proposals for an Israel-Palestinian settlement.

To have the best chances of success, the peace process must be conducted in an atmosphere free from violence. We call on all parties to work together to maintain calm.

First Phase III combination trial of a cancer immunotherapy to show improvement in progression-free survival as an initial treatment in advanced non-squamous non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC)

Roche (SIX: RO, ROG; OTCQX: RHHBY) today announced results from the positive, pivotal Phase III IMpower150 study of Tecentriq® (atezolizumab) and Avastin® (bevacizumab) plus chemotherapy (carboplatin and paclitaxel) in people with previously untreated advanced non-squamous non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). The study showed that people who received Tecentriq and Avastin plus chemotherapy had a 38 percent reduced risk of their disease worsening or death (progression-free survival, PFS) compared with those who received Avastin plus chemotherapy (hazard ratio [HR]=0.62; p<0.0001 95% CI: 0.52-0.74; median PFS = 8.3 vs. 6.8 months). Importantly, a doubling of the 12-month landmark PFS rate was observed with the combination of Tecentriq and Avastin plus chemotherapy (37 percent) compared to Avastin plus chemotherapy (18 percent). The rate of tumour shrinkage (overall response rate, ORR), a secondary endpoint in the study, was higher in people treated with Tecentriq and Avastin plus chemotherapy compared with Avastin plus chemotherapy (64 percent vs. 48 percent). The safety profile of the Tecentriq and Avastin plus chemotherapy combination was consistent with the safety profiles of the individual medicines, and no new safety signals were identified with the combination.

The analysis of the co-primary PFS endpoint in IMpower150 was assessed in two populations: all randomised people without an ALK or EGFR genetic mutation (intention-to-treat wild-type, ITT-WT) and in a subgroup of people who had a specific biomarker (T-effector “Teff” gene signature expression Teff WT). IMpower150 met its PFS co-primary endpoint per study protocol for both populations assessed. In the Teff-WT population, the combination of Tecentriq and Avastin plus chemotherapy reduced the risk of disease worsening or death by 49 percent compared to Avastin plus chemotherapy (HR=0.51; p<0.0001 95% CI: 0.38-0.68; median PFS = 11.3 vs 6.8 months).

De Autoriteit Consument & Markt heeft de houders van een informatienummer geïnformeerd over aangescherpte regels. Aanleiding voor de nieuwe regels is de onophoudelijke stroom aan vragen en klachten over dure doorschakelservices en betaaldiensten. De aangescherpte regels gelden voor 0900-, 0906- en 0909-nummers.

Belangrijkste wijzigingen

Houders van een informatienummer moeten voortaan aan het begin duidelijk maken wie zij zijn en aangeven wat de voornaamste kenmerken zijn van hun dienst. Een doorschakelservice of betaaldienst met een tarief per minuut mag voortaan niet meer worden aangeboden met een 0900- of 0909-nummer. Gebruikt een doorschakelservice of een betaaldienst een 0900- of 0909-nummer met een tarief per gesprek? Dan geldt hiervoor het maximale bedrag van €1,60 per gesprek.

Toezicht op de nummerhouders

De ACM gaat vanaf januari 2018 controleren of de houders van uitgegeven nummers zich aan de regels houden. Nummerhouders mogen bellers niet eindeloos aan het lijntje houden. De ACM kan een nummer intrekken als een nummerhouder zich niet aan de regels houdt.

Een voorbeeld

Stel: een consument wil bellen naar bijvoorbeeld de politie, de Belastingdienst of de klantenservice van zijn telecomaanbieder. Deze organisaties hebben zelf een telefoonnummer waarmee consumenten gratis of tegen een laag tarief kunnen bellen. Er zijn echter ook doorschakeldiensten die consumenten verleiden via hen te bellen. Zij kopen advertentieruimte in bij zoekmachines en verschijnen zo hoog in de zoekresultaten. Voorheen kon het dan gebeuren dat een consument via een doorschakeldienst van 90 cent per minuut belde, zonder dat hij zich daarvan bewust was.

De nieuwe regels voorkomen dat een 0900- of 0909-nummer wordt ingezet om het informatietarief zo lang mogelijk in rekening te brengen.

De consumentenprijzen waren in november 1,5 procent hoger dan in november 2016, meldt het CBS. In oktober was de prijsstijging 1,3 procent.

De stijging van de consumentenprijzen nam vooral toe door de prijsontwikkeling van benzine en kleding.

Een liter benzine kostte in november 2017 gemiddeld 1,59 euro. Dat is de hoogste prijs voor een liter euro95 in ruim 2 jaar tijd. In vergelijking met november 2016 was benzine 5,6 procent duurder. In oktober was de stijging op jaarbasis nog 1,1 procent.

Voor kleding betaalde de consument in november weliswaar 1,2 procent minder dan in dezelfde maand van 2016, maar in oktober was de prijsdaling op jaarbasis groter.

Stijging consumentenprijzen in Nederland even hoog als in de eurozone

In november was de prijsstijging van goederen en diensten in Nederland volgens de HICP ook 1,5 procent. Een maand eerder was dat nog 1,3 procent. In de eurozone nam de prijsstijging in november toe van 1,4 naar 1,5 procent.

De CPI is een belangrijke indicator voor het verschijnsel inflatie, maar is niet hetzelfde. De index geeft het prijsverloop weer van een pakket goederen en diensten zoals dagelijkse boodschappen, kleding, benzine, huur en verzekeringspremies.

Inflatie is breder dan de prijsontwikkeling van consumentengoederen en –diensten, want bijvoorbeeld ook koopwoningen, industriële producten, aandelen en goud veranderen van prijs.

De consumentenprijsindex (CPI) is één van de inflatie-indicatoren die is opgenomen in het prijzendashboard. Hierin staan ook andere inflatie-indicatoren zoals de prijsindex bestaande koopwoningen en de in- en uitvoerprijzen van de industrie.

In 2016 vielen 629 verkeersdoden en 21.400 ernstig verkeersgewonden in het Nederlandse verkeer. Daarmee is het aantal verkeersdoden voor het derde jaar op rij niet afgenomen en het aantal ernstig verkeersgewonden hoger dan ooit sinds het begin van de registratie (1993).

Ook het overlijdensrisico is niet verder gedaald de laatste paar jaar en het risico om ernstig verkeersgewond te raken laat zelfs een stijgende trend zien. In 2016 vielen 4 verkeersdoden en 131 ernstig verkeersgewonden per miljard km afgelegde afstand.

Het gaat dus niet goed met de verkeersveiligheid in Nederland. Om het aantal verkeersslachtoffers terug te dringen, pleit SWOV in het algemeen voor een systeemaanpak: alle actoren zijn gezamenlijk verantwoordelijk voor het verbeteren van de veiligheid van het verkeerssysteem als geheel.

Ontwikkeladvies voor 25.000 werkenden

Ruim 25.000 werkenden die 45 jaar of ouder zijn, kunnen zich aanmelden voor een Ontwikkeladvies. Met dit persoonlijke loopbaanadvies krijgen ze een beeld van hun situatie op de arbeidsmarkt. Vervolgens kunnen ze met een loopbaancoach bepalen welke stappen ze kunnen nemen om gezond en werkend de pensioenleeftijd te bereiken. Minister Koolmees van het ministerie van Sociale Zaken en Werkgelegenheid heeft hiervoor een subsidieregeling opengesteld.

In een snel veranderende arbeidsmarkt is het voor werkenden verstandig om regelmatig na te denken over de toekomst van het beroep en hun persoonlijke ontwikkeling. Maar in de praktijk komen mensen daar niet altijd aan toe. Zeker niet als ze goed op hun plek zitten en een druk leven leiden.

Het Ontwikkeladvies helpt om hier tijdig over na te denken. Daarom vindt minister Koolmees het belangrijk dat werkenden er al vanaf 45 jaar gebruik van kunnen maken. Samen met een loopbaancoach kunnen 45 plussers vragen nalopen als: wat kun je, wat wil je, hoe ziet de toekomst van je vak eruit en wat is ervoor nodig om in de toekomst gezond en met plezier te blijven werken in hetzelfde of in een ander beroep? Het resultaat van het Ontwikkeladvies is een persoonlijk Ontwikkelplan voor de komende jaren.

Het Ontwikkeladvies is een van de maatregelen uit het Actieplan Perspectief voor Vijftigplus. De gesprekken zijn beschikbaar voor zeven beroepsgroepen, zoals catering-, en verkoopmedewerker en secretarieel werk. Hier is 20 miljoen euro voor beschikbaar.

Minister Koolmees hoopt dat veel mensen gebruik van het Ontwikkeladvies gaan maken. “Werkenden die na een lange loopbaan hun baan verliezen, hebben soms een achterstand op het gebied van scholing. Dat maakt het vinden van nieuw werk lastiger. Door eerder in je carrière na te denken over de toekomst van je vak of functie, kun je dat helpen voorkomen.”

Drugs trade in the EU is estimated to generate at least EUR 24 billion in revenue each year, which makes it the EU’s largest criminal market.

Highly poly-criminal organised crime groups: Around 35% of the organised crime groups active in the EU are involved in the production, trafficking or distribution of illegal drugs. 75% of these groups deal in more than just one illegal drug.

620 new substances: The market for synthetic drugs and new psychoactive substances (NPS) remains the most dynamic drugs market in the EU; over the last 5 years 620 new substances were detected.

Fentanils, highly potent opioid narcotic drugs: There has been a large increase in the availability of fentanils on the European illicit drug market. Since 2012, a total of 24 new fentanils have been identified on Europe’s drug market, including 14 already since January 2016.

Darknet marketplaces: Drugs are now widely traded online on various platforms. The sale of drugs via Darknet marketplaces is a significant threat and continues to expand.

Poor success rate in fighting money laundering: The scale of money laundering activities in the EU is significant, reflecting the profits generated by the drugs trade. However, the global anti-money laundering framework has shown to have a poor success rate. Barely 1% of criminal proceeds are confiscated by relevant authorities at EU level.

These are some of the main points highlighted in the Strategic Report How Illegal Drugs Sustain Organised Crime in the EU, which Europol releases today. The report provides a concise overview of the illicit drugs market in the EU and was published on the occasion of a high-level conference at Europol to discuss enhancing the fight against illegal drugs.

Europol’s Deputy Executive Director of Operations Wil van Gemert: “The illicit drugs market remains the largest criminal market in the EU. More organised crime groups are active in the production, trafficking and distribution of illicit drugs than any other phenomenon. Moreover, drug markets are increasingly diversified and globalised, and interrelate more and more with other illicit and criminal markets and activities. The latter include, although not systematically, terrorism. Fortunately, in recent years cooperation between law enforcement authorities to fight serious and organised crime, be it drugs or any other crime area, is improving and providing grounds for good results in dismantling organised crime groups and networks.”

On 6 and 7 December 2017, the Heads of Drugs Units of all EU Member States, representatives of the EU Commission and EU agencies such as Eurojust and the European Monitoring Centre for Drugs and Drugs Addiction (EMCDDA) as well as the United States Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) , other operational partners and 10 third countries with operational agreements with Europol  will gather at Europol to identify and discuss the implementation of new ways to tackle the trade in illegal drugs, which is one of the most threatening criminal phenomena in the EU. The conference complements the evaluation of the implementation of the EU Drugs Strategy 2013-2020 and the EU Action Plan on Drugs 2013-2016 by the European Commission.

According to this evaluation, available evidence shows that there has been at least some progress in all EU Action Plan actions aimed at drug supply reduction, however, a significant reduction in the supply of drugs was not recorded in recent years. Building on the findings of the evaluation, the new Action Plan on Drugs 2017-2020 provides a strengthened response to the newly-emerging health and security challenges in the area of illicit drug use and trafficking.

Former Prime Minister of Catalonia Carles Puigdemont and four others said on Wednesday that they wanted to return “as quickly as possible” to Spain, but that they are the target of political prosecution by Madrid.

Speaking at a meeting with the press, he said he would remain in Belgium and would not return to Spain unless he received guarantees from the Spanish State.

The European arrest warrant against Puigdemont and former ministers Carla Ponsati, Antonio Comín, Lluís Puig and Meritxelle Serret was withdrawn on Tuesday, but the five are still wanted in Spain for embezzlement, insubordination, rebellion, misappropriation of public funds, corruption and sedition. They face up to 30 years in prison.

The five former Catalan leaders each denounced the proceedings initiated against them by the Spanish authorities. “These political proceedings violate European laws. They are an abuse of European laws and the Spanish Government will have to answer for that,” Ponsati said. “It’s a good day for us, a bad one for the Spanish government,” another ex-minister added.

The five former leaders wondered why their European arrest warrants had been withdrawn while many of their colleagues remained in prison in Spain on the same charges.

Moscow: NATO upgrades US nuclear weapons storage facilities in Europe — General Staff

NATO keeps increasing military presence in Eastern Europe by enlarging capacities of port and airfield infrastructure, upgrading delivery vehicles and storage facilities of US tactical nuclear weapons in Europe, Russian First Deputy Defense Minister General of the Army Valery Gerasimov, chief of the General Staff, said at an annual briefing for foreign military attaches on Wednesday.

"That is how the North Atlantic Alliance carries on with its policy aimed at increasing military presence in Eastern Europe. Capacities of port and aerodrome infrastructure are enlarging. Delivery vehicles and storage facilities of US tactical nuclear weapons in Europe are being upgraded," Gerasimov said.

SBM Offshore Awarded Turnkey Contract for Statoil's Johan Castberg Turret Mooring System

SBM Offshore is pleased to announce that the Company has been awarded the contract and received the corresponding notice from Statoil to proceed with the engineering, procurement, construction (EPC) work scope for a large-scale turret mooring system for its Johan Castberg development.

This award results from successful delivery of the front-end engineering and design (FEED) scope for the mooring system, which was delivered in close cooperation between Statoil and SBM Offshore teams. This project extends the market leading position of the Company in delivering large and complex mooring systems in demanding environments.

The Johan Castberg (formerly Skrugard) development is situated in the Barents Sea in Norway, approximately 100 kilometers north of the Snøhvit-field. The Castberg turret incorporates SBM Offshore's unique experience in designing large-scale mooring systems suitable for operating in harsh conditions. The turret is planned to be delivered in modules in early 2020, will be moored in c. 370 meter water depth and will have a capacity to accommodate 21 risers.

UK government has made no formal assessments of the economic impact of leaving the 28-nation bloc.

Brexit Secretary David Davis told a parliamentary committee Wednesday that the nation should be prepared for a profound shift in the way the economy operates on a scale similar to that of the 2008 financial crisis.

He says that since Britain must prepare for a "paradigm change," in the economy, any assessment in the automotive, aerospace financial services or other sectors would fail to be "informative."

The House of Commons' Brexit committee's chair, Hilary Benn, described the decision as "rather strange" given the momentous decisions at hand and since authorities wish to start renegotiating Britain's trade relations with the rest of Europe within weeks.

Britain and the EU on Monday came close to agreeing on key divorce terms, including how to maintain an open Irish border after the U.K. — including Northern Ireland — leaves the EU.

But the agreement was scuttled at the last minute when the Democratic Unionist Party, which props up Prime Minister Theresa May's minority government, warned it wouldn't support a deal it saw as undermining Northern Ireland's place in the United Kingdom.

Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson said that a solution to the issue "can only be discovered in the context of discussions on the end state of the U.K.'s relations with the rest of the EU."

"We are going to take back control of our borders, of our laws and of UK cash contributions and that's the way forward, and we will come up with a solution," he added.

Britain and the EU have only days to clinch a deal on borders, Britain's financial settlement with its EU partners and the rights of citizens hit by Brexit before a Dec. 14-15 EU summit that will decide whether Brexit talks can move on to future relations and trade.

The lack of progress so far has raised concerns that Britain may not have a deal by the time it officially leaves on March 29, 2019, and heightened fears that May's government could collapse.

VBK Beheer is de nieuwe eigenaar van winkelketen Bruna. Het uitgeversconcern neemt behoudens goedkeuring van de Autoriteit Consument en Markt per direct de aandelen in de winkelketen over van PostNL en ING. Als gevolg van de situatie die daardoor ontstaat, past VBK Beheer de structuur en naam aan en gaat verder als Shared Stories Group. Bruna krijgt een eigen positie binnen het nieuwe concern.

Tot de nieuwe groep behoren, naast Bruna, VBK Uitgeversgroep en Bookchoice. Merken die, in de ogen van de directie van het concern, goed op elkaar aansluiten. Wiet de Bruijn, Algemeen Directeur Shared Stories Group, zegt daarover: “Het is de missie van onze uitgevers om auteur en lezer te verbinden. De auteurs zijn de bron van prachtige boeken, de uitgevers begeleiden de auteurs bij hun werk en brengen de boeken op de markt. Samenwerking

Winkels en hoofdkantoor van Bruna kunnen na de voorgenomen overname profiteren van de marktkennis binnen de Shared Stories Group, maar ook van samenwerking op het gebied van bijvoorbeeld IT en HR.

Daarnaast ziet de Group goede kansen om van Bruna een sterkere omnichannel speler te maken. Het is de bedoeling de klantervaring te verbeteren, ongeacht of de klant in de winkel of online aankopen doet. De keten kan hiervoor gebruikmaken van de ervaring die beschikbaar is bij de Shared Stories Group, die daarnaast bereid is om te investeren in Bruna.

“We hebben een nieuwe aandeelhouder die ons meteen perspectief biedt en dat wekt vertrouwen, merk ik ook aan de positieve reacties binnen Bruna.” Algemeen Directeur van Bruna George Steur, die na de overname aanblijft, spreekt van een absolute win-situatie na de aansluiting bij de Shared Stories Group. “Het is natuurlijk erg fijn dat we bij een bedrijf gaan horen dat zich in hetzelfde marktgebied beweegt als wij, dat hetzelfde DNA heeft. Strategie

Met de komst van de nieuwe eigenaar verandert niets aan de uitgangspunten voor het assortiment van Bruna, dat naast boeken bestaat uit tijdschriften, papier- en schrijfwaren, kantoorartikelen, wens- en cadeaukaarten en multimedia producten.

In het voorjaar van 2018 zal een nieuwe strategie voor Bruna zijn beslag krijgen, waaraan Algemeen Directeur Steur sinds zijn aantreden in september jl. werkt. Na twee verlieslatende jaren kan hij daarbij bouwen op verbeterde operationele resultaten in 2017, die het gevolg zijn van kostendrukkende maatregelen en het op orde brengen van de processen binnen Bruna. De focus gaat er nu naar uit om assortiment en service nog beter aan te sluiten op de behoeften van de klant, waardoor de resultaten in 2018 (en verder) naar verwachting een sterke impuls zullen krijgen.
